The five AEO signals Bay Area AEO builds

Bay Area AEO reduces AI recommendation to five signals a business can control, then tailors each one by trade.

The agency’s explanation of why businesses get skipped is short. AI assistants do not rank ten websites. They read what is written about a business across the web, decide who fits the question and recommend a few names. If the information is thin, inconsistent or hard to read, the business gets skipped, even when it is the best option in town. AEO gives AI systems clean facts, clear answers and trusted third-party proof, so they can recommend the business with confidence. The five signals are how that happens.

Consistent listings

An assistant that finds two different phone numbers or two sets of hours has to guess, and an assistant that has to guess tends to pick someone else. Matching the name, opening hours and address on Google, Bing, Apple Maps and Yelp removes the guess. It is also the quickest signal to fix, which is why listing changes show up within weeks.

Specific reviews

Star averages tell an assistant little. Reviews that say what the business did, in the customer’s words, give it phrases to repeat. The dentist page notes that review requests inviting patients to mention comfort, specific treatments and staff by name produce language AI repeats in its answers. The Food & Drink page notes that reviews mentioning dishes, the atmosphere and the occasion get pulled straight into answers.

Answer-ready website

Clear pages that answer the exact questions people ask AI. For a plumber, that means service pages for water heaters, drains, repiping, sewer lines and leak detection with typical cost ranges and timelines. For a bar, it means current happy hour times and live music schedules on crawlable pages, not only on social media.

Structured data

Schema markup tells AI the services, service area and hours in a format machines read directly. The restaurant page names Menu and Restaurant schema on crawlable menu pages built from PDF and image menus.

Trusted mentions

Local press, neighborhood guides and directories that mention the business by name act as third-party confirmation. Which sources count depends on the trade: tourism boards and wine guides for wineries, Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell and Justia for law firms, Houzz for remodelers, Psychology Today for therapists.

Seeing the signals work

The agency’s site has an interactive demo built on these five signals. A visitor picks a question such as “What’s a good restaurant in Palo Alto for a birthday dinner for six people?”, chooses ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Overviews, and switches signals on. A confidence meter starts at 6% and climbs as signals are added. The demo is labeled as a simulated example; its purpose is to show how assistants weigh information.

Clean facts, clear answers and trusted third-party proof, so AI can recommend with confidence.
